Ahhhh, vacation! Who doesn’t love going on holiday and traveling to new and exotic locations? It’s just so much fun! Getting out of the regular routine, seeing new people, learning about different ways of living, enjoying the food! The only problem is that staying healthy while on holiday seems like a daunting task.
Eating well is difficult on its own, but at home we can rely on routines to keep us in check. When traveling, not only are we completely out of routine (that is the point after all, right?), but we are also seeing all kinds of amazing foods that can really tempt us. But don’t despair! Here are a few tips that can keep you on a healthy track while you enjoy your vacation.
Prepare Snacks to Take with you
Whether going somewhere close or traveling abroad, preparing some snacks that you can take on your journey is always a good idea. Taking a few sandwiches, fruits, nuts, and homemade oatmeal or granola bars can give you an energy boost as you travel and can prevent you from making some unhealthy fast-food choices while getting to your destination.
Find a local Market
The point of traveling is to get to know the local culture. What better way of doing so than visiting a local market? This way, you can see for yourself all the healthy and whole-food options available, all the while enjoying the local flair and feel of a place. If you have a kitchen available where you’re staying, you can take advantage of all the food options and cook a meal for yourself. If you don’t have a kitchen, you can buy smaller portions and non-perishables to snack on.
Research The Local Cuisine
Before you travel, it’s always a great idea to research where you’re going. More than ever before, we have so much information at our finger tips! You can easily find local eateries, markets, and must-visit restaurants before you even arrive at your destination. Many restaurants will even have their menus online! You can get a general idea of what the local cuisine is like and plan the meals you will be eating ahead of time.
Make Good Choices When You Go Eat
Enjoying the local cuisine does not mean that you can’t take care of your health. Menu’s everywhere are full of good choices and less good (or honestly downright horrible!) choices. This is when the research point above comes in handy! If you have an idea of what the local fare is before you get to your destination, you can go prepared to make the best food choices. It will help to know what typical foods are and whether certain preparations are better than others. Just remember to choose whole foods instead of processed foods, chose baked over fried, pick the salads and veggies over the simple starches. You know how to eat!
One of the best ways to stay eating healthy while on holiday is to stay active! Try to sneak in a jog, swim, hike or walk around the local area. Take advantage of the hotel gym if there is one available. If you are into extreme sports, be sure to take advantage of the local offerings. Staying active means that you will be more in tune with your body’s needs and that will remind you to fuel your body properly, even if you’re not at home.
Indulge…Just a Little
There’s nothing worse than completely denying yourself, especially while on vacation! It’s ok to have a treat here or there. After all, you may not come across certain foods again for a long time! So, if you keep it healthy and make good choices all along the way, you will be able to have a little taste of the less healthy options guilt free.
